How many years have you been shooting? How many weddings have you photographed?
We met in a high school photo class 🙂 We have had cameras around for years, some film, some digital. We were always shooting for fun and Jess was on the other side of the camera for a number of years. Then about 8 years ago we decided to give it a go and see if we could get people to pay us to do what we loved 😉 so far so good. We’ve photographed over 300 weddings and with each one we refine our craft. That’s the coolest thing about a weddings, they are predictably unpredictable and we are always learning new tricks to take with us on the next one. We thrive on the in the moment shooting style and our connection to the moment and experience over the years helps us anticipate the moments coming and allows us to grab the stuff that others might miss.
How would you define your style ?
Our style is very natural and photo journalistic because of our “in the moment” approach. Not overly polished, set up or posey and leans more toward the side of candid. We shoot together and apart and we have definitely have different and complimentary shooting styles. So what you get back is a nice blend of both of us and diverse… it’s your story from 2 sets of artistic eyes. Being attentive to all thats is going on around us lands us the coolest shots… we thrive on grabbing the unexpected moments that cant be repeated.
Do you travel? Is there a travel fee?
Oh yeah we do!! Have passports and will travel for the right opportunity although with little ones at home we try ti limit our out of state destination weddings to one or two great opportunities a year. California is totally game though, anytime and aything within 75 miles of home [Temecula] and there is no fee. Outside of that and we require travel / accommodations be taken care of… the last thing we need to do after rocking a 10 hour day with creative juices flowing is hop in a car at midnight and drive 4 hours home 😉
How long should I book you guys for? is 6 hours enough? 8? whats the norm?
And that is TOTALLY up to you. We’ve been shooting 10 hour days here and there… and then a few elopements that were 2 hours. Everyones celebration is different so it really depends on your day and what is most important to you as far as coverage goes. Do you want us there for your exit? Are you doing a first look? Often we arrive a couple hours before the ceremony to grab getting ready, candids, details, and group photos. If you are doing a first look then we’ll end up starting a bit earlier, 2-3 hours pre ceremony to get all the pictures taken care of prior. But again, every wedding is different. Give us a call and let us know what you have planned for your day and we can totally help you figure it all out.
where you see each other for the first time. We capture the emotion of the first look and we take it and roll into an epic portrait session with just the two of you. This takes away the pressure of a cocktail hour photo session which usually includes family photos, bridal party, and portraits. When doing a first look we typically arrive 2-3 hours pre ceremony and front load everything so that after the ceremony you can hit your cocktail hour and mingle with guests, take time out just the two of you or take a few more photos if you’d like. Totally up to you since most all the photos are finished ahead of time. It makes the day flow nicely for you and your guests. I can’t tell you how many times I am told after just how thankful our brides and grooms are to have had that moment privately and how much it calmed the nerves it after being able to see each other. The day goes by fast and there are a number of standout moments that will stick with you. This is one of them.
Wait, first look? Whats that all about?
The first look is great and what was once on traditional is becoming the new norm. A first look involves setting up a private moment for the two of you to share
How long till we get our photos back?
During busy months in summer and fall it takes between 4-6 weeks to get you your photos back. Does that seem like a long time? When you are anxiously waiting it does… but trust us, it’ll be worth the wait. We go through and adjust each photo to insure that you are going to LOVE what you get back. Like I said, we know you are anxious to see them so a week or so after your wedding [right as you return from your honeymoon] we usually will toss you out a sneak peak to hold you over 🙂
You do this every weekend… what suggestions do you have for us? should we hire a wedding coordinator?
We have a ton of suggestions for you that will insure your day goes smoothly and we can talk about all that at the meeting rahter than bang em out on here… everyones day is differnt and some suggestions will make more sense for your day than others would. Over the past 8 years we have seen our share of disasters and avoided disasters.. so while the initial thought of a coordinator might turn you off, a PHENOMENAL coordinator is worth every single dollar. If you are trying to stick to a budget then this is the person that will help you stay under it. Aside from that stay focused on what is important to you and spend on those areas to insure you get what you want. Are you a foodie? Then cake and dinner may be important to you? OR perhaps you want to have and awesome party with all the guests talking about what a raging good time they had?? Then focus on entertainment and booze and perhaps a Photo booth 😉 In the end we know every single one of your vendors plays a huge part in shaping your day… but we are most concerned about telling the story of your day because after the cake is all gone and flowers get tossed out, the only thing you are going to be looking forward to are your photos!! truth.
How soon should we take engagement photos?
Sooner the better if you want to use them for save the dates or anything else. We have done them a long as a year before and for destination weddings we have done them as close as the day before. The engagement shoot is our chance to all hang out and have a good time before the wedding. Get to know one another so that you know what to expect from us and we can get a feel for the two of you. We like to break down the walls and get you comfy with us. We want to know who is more outgoing, wild crazy, or timid in front of the camera? What does it take to get the laughs out… by the end you will be completely at ease with us and having fun. Then on your big day we roll in, give you a high five and pick up right where we left off. Its true. Just read some of the rants and reviews 🙂
Where will our engagement session take place?
Anywhere you want! Seriously. Some people ask where our favorite place is… to which I ask, “whats yours?” We want it to mean something to you and don’t want to take you to a place just because thats how its supposed to go. Lets get creative, have some fun with it. If you have a special spot you like to hang or activity that you like to do then lets talk about it. We have done engagement sessions all over the place there are dozens of beautiful California beaches, up in the snow, in the mountains among the pine trees, downtown… wherever!? alleyways or burnt down school houses in the middle of nowhere have made for awesome pics and depending on your tastes and styles we can come up with all kinds of cool stuff if we put our heads together. We have done themed sessions with dune buggies, baseball fields, soccer stadiums, a Bonnie & Clyde robbery, and even a zombie apocalypse. Think big, its totally up to you.
What is your favorite venue?
There have been so many great places… its impossible to pick one. We LOVE photographing weddings at the outdoor/ rustic venues. Thats the best part of what we do… we always get to travel and see new places!! Walking into a venue I have never been before is one of my favorite things. Like a blank canvas or a story that is new, we live for “first times”. Although, it doesnt hurt to have photographed a place before and have a handle on things it really is great to get out of town and shoot someplace new. Have passports and will travel!
What kind of gear do you use? Do you have back-up?
We shoot with Canon 5D4’s! Yes, we also have back-up’s. I like to photograph with a pair, Jess shoots with one. We have a ton of lenses and if you wanna talk techy we can totally fill you in on what our fav’s are, just ask us at the meeting! just know that our cameras are top of the line and shoot with dual memory cards so we are always shooting with a backup of a backup and we cycle out and change all of our memory cards before each wedding season. You should only format and rewrite over a card so many times.
So you shoot digital… Just how many photos will I receive? Are they edited?
Yeah we rock digital and there is no limit to the number of photos we take [we have lots of memory cards]. We will narrow the final number down to approximately 800 to 1,200 images telling the story of your day… The number varies with the amount of hours booked and yes, we edit every single one. color correction, cropping toning and stylizing. We’ll do the retouching when needed but arent into the heavy over polished look as you can see on our site by the pics we take. Think clean, beautiful, and natural.
Do you share copyright? We want to have our disk of images to print ourselves.
Absolutely! When we got married that was one the main things we were after… a disk of our photos, edited, with printing rights 🙂 They are all yours to do with as you wish! There are soooo many resources out there for you to do wonderful things with your pictures, we leave that to you. No sense in paying an inflated fee for that. All of our pricing is based on this and there are no hidden costs or extra fees, aside from tax. I hate Uncle Sam but its something that unfortunately has to be done.
Is there a deposit required? How much?
There is. Typically we take $1000 down to reserve your date. Remaining balance is due by the day of your wedding. Payment plans are available and you can always pay it off earlier if you wish. We do all of our contracts and quotes online as well so it is VERY easy. It just takes a few clicks to make it all official.
Do you accept credit cards?
Yes we do. We are set up to take them all! However, please keep in mind when taking CC payments that a transaction fee may apply. Get around the 3% by writing a check.
Why do you charge sales tax?
Because we are required to charge sales tax whenever a tangible good is produced… Your box, zip drive, prints, PARTYbooth and wedding albums are classified as just that [booooo!] So local sales tax is 8% and will be added on to all collections. I ramble and rant a bit on that in a post elsewhere and if you want to avoid the tax on your total package we can draft ya up a special contract and deliver your files electronically [link download] and you wont have to pay the government a single cent.
