Tutorial: TimThumb Thumbnail Generation

Posted on 23 August 08 by Michael Hutagalung in Knowledgebase and Tutorials 85 Comments

If you still have problems getting the thumbnail automatic generation working, please read this tutorial. I spent a lot of my time creating this tutorial, including screen shots for some significant steps, and adding narrative text to each image. Please consider reading the whole instruction again, again, and again because I found out that there is 90% possibility that you missed one spot and there are many occurrences one say that he/she did not missed anything but ended up saying “Ah, yeah, I forgot that one.” :D

The CHMOD 777

Upload and activate the Arthemia theme. Then, the first step is to make the scripts and cache folder writable. You can either try ‘777′ writable or ‘755′ writable. Some web hosting company prevent you making any folder ‘777′ writable due to some security reasons. But, I suggest you to try with ‘777′ writable first. I use FileZilla to do the FTP work because it is free and has a lot of features. To make the folders writable, simply right click the folder name and select ‘File Attributes’ and a dialog box will show up.

You can tick all the attributes there, consider it a finger exercise, or directly type 777 as the folder attribute. Do this to both scripts and cache folder.

You’re done with FTP work and may continue to the image uploading procedure.

Uploading an image

To upload image, you can use the built-in Add Image WP feature. In the post editing page, notice the Add media icons just below your post title and permalink. Click “Add Image” and an image uploading page will show up.

Upload any image that you like, preferably the properly sized one (for example: 300×300 pixel or bigger for Arthemia theme).

After the image is uploaded, you can see the image location from the ‘Link URL’ field. In this tutorial, it is: http://michaelhutagalung.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/1.jpg. Values may vary depending on your blog settings. One may have the time-structured folder while others may not. Copy that value but remember to get rid of your blog home page location. In my case, the final value will be wp-content/uploads/2008/08/1.jpg.

Then, close the image uploading page and you do not need to clik ‘Insert to Post’ button if you do not want to. When you’re back in the post editing page, scroll down until you find “Custom Fields”. Make a new Custom Field with “Image” as the key and the image location as the “Value”.

You’re done. Please feel free to comment or ask for support in the forum but only if you’re 100% sure that you did not miss anything. :D

I changed all permissions to 755!
777 never worked. Now working fine :-)

  • JP Maroney says:

I tried EVERYTHING Michael described — and still had issues. Then took suggestion found on this baord about contacting my host, hostgator, to get my site whitelisted on the mod stuff.

    WORKS!!!

    Michael — your theme rocks!!!

I am using arthemia premium but facing same problem as mentioned by many users above. I did what you asked to do but thumbnails are not coming. Theme all over is good but this image problem is driving me crazy…

  • Lewis says:

Does this thumbnail generation (automatic or manual) have any problems with hostgator? I am on hostgator, with Arthemia Premium, and I have set the perissions to 777, then 775, then tried manual thumbnails, automatic, everything. Nothing works.

I am wondering whether it’s hostgator?

    Thanks.

    • TJ Kelly says:

I have HostGator also, and this does not work.
I simply see blank squares for thumbnails with the (alternate) text in them.

Back when I had Dreamhost, it worked like a charm.

  • I purchased the Arthemia Premium theme. I LOVE it! It is the first theme I have purchased.

I need a little help with what seems to be a common issue. My thumbnails are not showing up. My headline is not showing, my featured is not showing and the sidebar categories are not showing (there are a series called “Twitter Updates” that do not have images…I am not talking about these).

I have it set on first image. When I view the ftp all the images are in there. Did I miss something? I have viewed all the pics, vids and read the .pdf.

    Thank you for your help.

    blessings,
    Wendy

Hello all, I am running into problems getting the Headline working with the timthum resizer. I have looked all through thes forums, triple checked the install guide and everything is in order. I have noticed that some of you have problems with Hostgator switching over to APache 2.0.

Could you PLEASE help me with what you said to hostgator to get the problem fixed. DO I simply asked to be “whitelisted” or what specifically should I ask them for?

Thanks so much. Love the theme and can’t wait to get the tiny few bugs hammered out!

    Hi! Great theme!

Is it possible to have the “Image” custom field draw from a picture that is already uploaded on the web, instead of having to upload it into the wp/uploads folder?

    Thanks!

  • Rich says:

Yes Hostgator and their Apache 2.0 upgrade killed some of my websites too, but u just gotta tell them about your issuse and they will fix it.. it is a pain but…

security is important so.. thats good!

I just uploaded the premium arethia, and uploaded the template xml doc. None of the images come through for the thumbnails. Even when I try uploading my own, They don’t load correctly. If I choose first image, the pictures image frames are there, they just dont load up. In custom image, they picture frame doesnt even show. I 777 both cache and scripts. Please help, thanks

  • Michael says:

    @Greg:
Exactly, First-Image auto assignment is available in the premium version. You can read the side-by-side comparison here:
    http://michaelhutagalung.com/2008/09/arthemia-free-versus-premium

  • Greg says:

Thumbnails are working perfectly, but I have a question that’s perhaps an advanced feature.

Is there a way to have the thumbnail pic automatically generated without having to enter the custom field info? In other words, can the custom field tag be created automatically based on the first picture in the posting or something?

The reason I ask is I use the Apple iPhone WordPress app almost daily to take pictures and upload them to my website, but then I later have to log into the website when I get back to a computer and add the thumbnail manually. But it would be great to just take a picture, create a post from my phone, and the website automatically had a thumbnail.

I’m not holding my breath for Wordpress to update their iPhone app, so I thought I’d ask if this was a possibility. If the premium app already does this, it would be worth the $70 right there.

    Great theme, either way, though!

  • Sara says:

Thank you very much for this tutorial! It helped a lot.
The mistake i did was to write wordress/ in the custom field url.
But it works fine now, thanks!

  • jessen says:

I have read the tutorial over and over again and I was sure I did not miss any step but still I could not get the thumbnail showed. I get frustrated and did not know what to do since all the steps in the tutorial have been done appropriately.

Thanks to Gary now I know that the problem was my hosting company hostgator

  • Gary says:

    Re: Thumbnails not working.

During the last week of October, Hostgator started upgrading their servers to Apache 2.0. There’s a security function in Apache 2.0 that prevents the thumbnails from working. The solution Hostgator proposed was changing the rewrite rules and removing this from the index.php and archive.php:

Or, Hostgator can add each of your domains to a “whitelist” that will allow the thumbnails to show.

This seems to affect both Arthemia and Arthemia Premium.

I’m not happy with either solution proposed by Hostgator. The scripts worked before their upgrade, they shouldn’t expect users to go back and change the code in previously functional installations because Hostgator can’t get the security settings right in Apache 2.0

  • Dimis says:

I got the Arthemia Premium although everything works perfect, what I don’t understand is the “Latest Video Post” I don’t get the instructions, can someone please explain me what to do? I’m that close changing the theme just because I can’t figure that. I’m not experienced with the custom fields. I did put “Video” keyword in the key, however the video still appear as a link in the latest posts, not in the Latest Video Posts, despite the fact I have a category called Videos and I do have it selected in the Theme’s options.

  • DG says:

Things been working great until october 27; site stopped showing thumbnails. Checked the cache folder permissions, got it as 777. This is the blog url if you would take a look at http://www.dailyglobal.com/
    Please help.

    you know what, u r supercoool !!!

Thanks for such a nice tutorial, my site looks awesome in your theme !!!!!!

  • Please help me out I tried with all the guidelines mentioned above, still not able to get the thumbnails please help me out

  • legacy daily says:

I removed the img tag width and height and let the timthumb generate the image to the right dimensions in Arthemia free. The image on the front page is not square any more but rather respects the aspect ratio of the original. I think it looks much better. Your themes are great. Keep up the good work.

  • martinwaiss says:

I love this outstanding theme. It’s simple yet powerful, with great straight-forward information architecture and design. Great job, Michael!

@thumbnails: The thumbnail-generator works fine for me, if you do everything as described above; though I’m not such a big fan of directories with all permissions for everyone…

Anyway, I’d love to figure out how to submit thumbnails by my own (e.g. via Post Custom Field: “Thumbnail” (100×65px), so the script would check first, if there was any custom field entry marked “Thumbnail” and only get to action, if there was no such entry. ??

It would help to optimize the page loading times and the server load as well, because if I get it right, the thumbnail-script generates all of the thumbnails on the fly every time again and again…

Have you been thinking about any “other” solution on this topic? Thanks.

  • Elijah says:

After a little bit of fumbling and double checking I got it working just fine!

I absolutely love this theme - and plan to buy an unlimited license on the premium version.

    Cheers!

  • Steven says:

FYI thumbnails for this theme don’t work with Wordpress MU -
either in the subdomains or in the main domain of WPMU.

  • Michael says:

@smitchell: well, have you double-checked everything? I guess you might have missed something there. anyway, can you send direct e-mail to sales [at] colorlabsproject [dot] com and give me your Invoice ID and you website location?

@jay: upgrade to premium version, perhaps? :D

  • Jay says:

Yes you are right i installed to the main and it worked… but that sucks cause my original website is .asp and i wanted to Wp to suplement it. so does anyone have any ideas on how to make it work from the sub directory :?:

  • Anthony says:

I DID IT!!! I CONFIRM THAT THUMBS WORKS!

Just install your Wordpress to the MAIN directory, not in a sub directory like \wordpress.

So to work correctly you must have an address like this:
    http://YourHostName\

If you have for example an
    http://YourHostName\wordpress\
    or
    http://YourHostName\wp\
    ->it will NOT work…

    TESTED

  • Anthony says:

I use Artemia and i have the thumbnail problem.
    BUT
Reading all posts i noticed that people affected by the problem have wordpress installed in a subfolder of the host. I mean that the problem with thumbs may be due to a path incongruence.
Example: you have installed wordpress on a subdirectory like \wp or \wordpress
So let’s try to reinstall wordpress in the main directory of your host, not in a sub folder.
I hope it works! I’m trying it now…

Waiting for your answer. Thank you!

  • Mike says:

the images are generated ( i can see them at the uploads folder) but nothing is shown in the homepage.

    yes I started with wp-content

  • Michael says:

    @balibuddy: thanks for the info. it’s quite a life-saver. :)

@Sufi-sticate: the Full-Size/Medium/Thumbnail options have nothing to do with this. Wordpress already has a feature to make thumbnails from images but this TimThumb script is not using nor related to that option.

And I can see that TimThumb thumbnail is already working there. The headline post has its thumbnail showing now. And your next problem is why there are another 100×67-pixel thumbnails for all of your posts. are you using any plugin that auto-generates thumbnails? are you using any plugin that put thumbnails in excerpts? please deactivate that plugin. and, don’t delete anything from the index page because it has nothing to do with that file.

@Mike: did you put the correct value in the field? Start with ‘wp-content’?

  • Mike says:

I tried what you have said to fabrizo and the other one:
    here is the error message:

    Hi Michael:) again

Okayyy! I got it to work. Only thing is I have this little 150×150 image showing in the headline article preview, next to the big image. It dawned on me that it was told to be there by the index page, so I looked for anything with 150×150 and found the code, but I did not want to delete anything without checking with you first, lest I screw things up.

Please point out what it is I ought to be deleting.

    Many thanks! Many Many Thanks:)

  • Sufisticate says:

    Hello Mochael Jubel!

I am a fan of your work and have made a move to download your arthemia template.

I have spent the last 6 or so hours trying to get the headline photo to show and I promise I have followed ur tutorial, as well as the advice in the forum and have harassed fellow acquaintances on how to do this, to no avail.

So this is my last glimmer of hope. I truly hope you might be able to assist.

I invite you to view my site. Perhaps you can see what it is I am not doing right.

When I upload a photo, I tend to select full-size as opposed to thumbnail, but regardless it doesnt show up on the mainpage’s headline space.

I have made sure the caps used in “Image” are correct as well as the “wp-content/2008/09/tetedemoine.jpg” path.

I have also changed the writable access to the script folder and cache to 777 and then to 755 and still nothing.

Please help Obi-Wan-Kenobi, you’re my only hope.

    Thanks:)

  • Michael says:

    @Andie:
    :)

  • Michael, ini theme yang sangat bagus.

One question though. Might be a very dumb one. You said to set chmod to “777″ for “script” and “cache” folders. I can’t find “cache” folder. Where is it?

I am now using MassivePress for the foodie site and would like very much to change to yours, but I have problem with it, even I have done all you said above - except the “cache” part. I had no problem with custom fields at MassivePress. So there must be something that I am doing wrong with your theme.

  • Michael says:

@Fabrizio + Yoav: right-click the box that should contain the image and click View Image (in Firefox). There should be an error message. There we could start to analyze the problem.

  • Fabrizio says:

    no puedoooooooo

  • Yoav says:

I have followed your instructions and no thumbnails are working. :(

  • Michael says:

@vnSymbianblog: well, from the tutorial above you may see that pictures are uploaded via HTTP using Wordpress built-in upload feature. Pictures are not uploaded via http://FTP. :)

And you can’t have thumbnails generated from images that are not located in your web server. So, if abc.com is not your blog, you can’t have that. And if it is your blog, you’ll still need to get rid of the blog URL and start with ‘wp-content’.

  • Hi michaeljubel,

This tutorial is good! But can we use pictures from other direct links to make thumbnails? Exp: http://www.abc.com/image.jpg instead of wp-content/uploads/2008/08/1.jpg.

Because I have problem uploading my pictures to my host (I'm using free-host at byethost.com), I have to upload them manually by CuteFPT. My free-host provide just ONE FTP account so my blog's authors can't upload pictures manually to make thumbnail :(
Thanks for creating such a great theme! I love it!

    Hello,

I’m dying to get this timthumb to work, I’m using WPMU and it isn’t liking it for some reason. I’ve followed everything step by step, but it never generates an image. I’m assuming it has something to do with the way WPMU configured my .htaccess file. Anyway, http://sheaallen.com/wp-content/themes/arthemia/scripts/timthumb.php?src=files/2008/08/143014w_sm.gif&w=300&h=275&zc=1&q=100

My .htaccess file contains the following three lines which I think may be throwing it off:

    #uploaded files
    RewriteRule ^(.*/)?files/$ index.php [L]
    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !.*wp-content/plugins.*
    RewriteRule ^(.*/)?files/(.*) wp-content/blogs.php?file=$2 [L]

If I move both the timthumb.php file AND the sample.gif out of the main wordpress folder, then it works no problem. Any suggestions?

Thanks a lot for a great theme!!

Delete the file (so we will start from fresh log), refresh your blog, and you will find a new “error_log” there. Open that file with Notepad and paste the content here. The last line of the file will help us to narrow down the problem.

I just realized why I could not get it working, same issue, I’m on Hostagator. Before I ask hostagator to put me this domain on the so called “white list” as Gary mentioned here, perhaps there are changes we can do in the code?

And Michael, there’s no “error_log” file, at least in my case.

its your server telling there is 500 Internal Server Error. Delete any .htaccess file, change back all permissions to 755. The server doesn’t allow you to have 777.

The script can’t generate images from external sources. That’s why some of your thumbs are not there.

And about videos, you need to create a custom Field named “Video” and add the YouTube URL there.

    Hi Funkytown,

I’ve checked your website. Here’s what I found:
This is one of the image you want to generate a thumb from:
    http://www.radiopersonal.de/saarpresseportal/wp-content/uploads/zeltpalast.jpg
It’s not a valid JPG file. Go click the link above and you will see no image.

And for another post that you have, this is the original image:
    http://www.radiopersonal.de/saarpresseporta/wp-content/upload/apres%20ski.jpg
The image does not exist either. Click the link above and you won’t find the image.

Anyway, you are using the premium version. You could select the “First-Image” method so you don’t have to deal with any custom fields. :)

Ok, now i have checked, so

If i download the picture with the galery, then the image will not show in the headline or feature section.

if i use the ftp-program and copy the jpg in the upload directory and fill it in then (url in galery), THEN can i see the image!

    Questions:

    1. Why do you think are they problems with the uploading with wordpress?

    2. If its possible (with my premium version), to show images in the headline and featured section WITHOUT fill in the article? (of coure if I have “first image” option)

    3. I would like the most of pictures not downloading. How can I insert a picture for headlines and features ONLY with the Url from an another server in the www?

    Thanks
