The benefits of a first look! Im sure you know that the crazy tradition of a bride and groom not seeing one another before the marriage originated a looooong time ago, right? It seems old school enough that I bet it’s no shock to you. Well this next part might come as a shock to you but this practice actually stems from arranged marriages, which are in fact is still going on all over the world. Arranged marriages!? whhhhhaa? Thats right, LOVE doesnt always rule and “follow your heart” is seriously something of fairy tales in many cultures across the world. India being the largest. Its said that 90% of marriages in India are arranged.
When it comes to these arranged marriages there was concern that if the couple that was arranged to be married saw one another before the marriage, they might have an opportunity to alter their mind and back out of the organized wedding!! **dannnnnng!**
Regardless of whether or not your marriage is arranged 😉 there is no doubt that the element of surprise as the bride rolls down the aisle is legitimately the moment of truth and a very emotional and intense one. Traditionally couples waiting until this moment to see on another. However, the non traditional is becoming the new norm and first looks are totally in right now.
In fact, I suggest a first look/ reveal to most all of our couples. I’d venture to say that 80% of our couples getting married go with a first look.
Below are a few key reasons reasons why this palm springs wedding photography crew feels that a first look is that the best way to go:
First looks take the stress out of the wedding day –
If you opt out of a first look, then come cocktail hour just know that WE have a lot to do. Family photos, bridal party photos plus a portrait session between the two of you. annnnnnd hopefully if there is enough time [you didnt choose get to extended on the family pics] to do all this cause if there are any snags in there [grandpa wanders off for family pics] or any delays, guess who gets jacked on time!?! You and your portrait session. Which sometimes is the reason couples hire us to begin with. To not be able to deliver you those amazing photos cause time ran out for uncontrollable reasons sucks. HArd to push it back and squeeze it from nowhere when catering in on our butt to get you in the grand entrance so the food is served on time warm.
A first look will change the pace of your wedding day –
Time is the most critical part of a wedding. A good wedding planner will tell you that the day all comes down to timing. A stressful wedding day there is typically never enough time. A very relaxed day will have plenty of it. Go with a first look and front load your pictures early in your day and you will have time after the ceremony to do as you please. When you do a first look you will have gotten your portrait session + bridal party pics all taken care. Imagine, a whole hour to do family photos annnnnnnd ?? whatever you want! lol take a break and chill out just the two of you privately, OR go hit your cocktail hour to actually eat some of the fancy snacks that you paid for with a little wine while you mingle with your guests!? yeah its awesome!
“I dont want it to take away from the moment he sees me coming down the aisle”
Guess what!? It wont. Ive done literally hundreds of these. Its still intense up there, music playing all eyes on you. Its the real deal. I’ve seen guys cry again. It doesn’t in any way take anything away from walking down the aisle. In fact, many couples will tell us the opposite in that it made it better for them. It calmed the nerves before coming down the aisle and allowed them to enjoy the moment and not be totally on stage in front of everyone overwhelmed with emotion in a freakin panic attack. Most couples actually have said the private moment they shared for the first look was the highlight of the day. A moment that sticks out to them forever.
Expanding on that last part… I will say that going with a reveal / first look offers the two of you a totally private moments in a day that passes by VERY quickly. This moment is no doubt one of the stand out moments.I tell my couples this all the but during the day time speeds up, time slows down and by the end of it you are exhausted and not only that, its kind of a blur. There will be some moments that will resonate with you because of just how powerful they are… and the first look is one of them
