Making a Special Hookah
Intro paragraph on making a special hookah
- Coals – how many you need is dependent on the size of your hookah head. A standard head size calls
- for 2 coals, whereas larger sized ones would need 3 coals.
- Shisha – any brand or flavor you prefer.
- Aluminum foil – enough to cover the hookah head.
Step 1: Pack your hookah head with shisha. Be careful not to overfill it above the top of the head. Don’t push it down- it should look “fluffy.” In the video, we use Al Fakher’s vanilla flavored shisha (one of our favorites).
Step 2: Grind the amount of marijuana you’d like, then add to the top of the shisha, gently mixing it in. We typically use about a gram of weed for 3 or more people.
Step 3: Cover the hookah head with the aluminum foil- shiny side down (don’t want the shisha or weed to burn!).
Step 4: Use the toothpick to poke holes in the top of the hookah head. The more holes, the better, but be careful not to make them too big. We typically create a spiral pattern- starting in the middle and working our way in circular rings outward. You can copy this or create your own pattern, as long as there is an adequate number of holes for it to “breathe.”
Step 5: Heat the coals. Note: Flip the coals over when the bottom half of the coal is a warm orange-red color, ensuring evenly distributed heat throughout your hookah session. You can do this in various ways- hot plate, torch, or another type of coil burner. The coals we used in the video are Coco Nara, a coconut shell charcoal coal, which is of higher quality and therefore burns longer. In our experience, this brand usually takes approximately 10-15 minutes to heat three coals completely. If you’re short on time, you can use Instant Light coals, which contain an accelerant that heats them faster.
Step 6: Prepare your hookah for smoking (if not already done). Make sure your hookah has water in the base, filled 1-2 inches below the stem. Pro tip: Like any other water pip, putting ice cubes in the base will make the smoke “lighter” or not as heavy in your chest or lungs.
Step 7: Transport the hot coals to the hookah head- evenly spaced out around the outer edge of the head.
Step 8: Smoke and enjoy your hookah! Tip: Halfway through your hookah, remove the coals from the head, brushing or blowing as much ash off as you can. Then reposition the coals back on top of the head and continue to enjoy!
Pros of Special Hookahs:
- Nice, mellow high.
- Easy to share with friends – for clean use with multiple people, purchase disposable hookah tips.
- Can be time-consuming to set up
- Increased tobacco use
- Not a long-lasting, prolonged high
There are many ways to consume cannabis, I find that smoking from a Hookah produces a unique high. Give it a try and drop us a line on what you think of it.
