Top winter honeymoon destinations

If you’re looking for the perfect winter honeymoon destination, you’ll be pleased to hear that there are many options available. And whether you’re thinking long or short haul, the good news is that travelling out of the main season means you’ll often experience countries when they’re quieter, giving you first dibs on where to sit on the beach! Another bonus is that they’re often cheaper. We’ve picked our favourite destinations to make sure your winter honeymoon is one to remember.

The Canary Islands

If you’re looking for a honeymoon somewhere hot but not too far away, consider an all-inclusive package to the Canary Islands.  A perfect year-round destination, take a 4.5-hour flight from the UK and you’ll be in the warm winter climes of Gran Canaria, Tenerife, Lanzarote or Fuerteventura. With December temperatures averaging around 20˚C/68F, you’ll be able to relax and enjoy the beach or exploring these beautiful islands.

Venice, Italy

Venice, Italy

Venice is an ideal winter honeymoon destination because in summer, the capital of northern Italy’s Veneto region gets overrun with tourists. Heading there in winter gives you the chance to explore the City of Romance at a leisurely pace with your beloved. Enjoy a romantic tour of the city on a gondola through the Grand Canal or a stroll through the many squares in this sumptuous Italian city.

Cape Town, South Africa

Beautiful Cape Town has a Mediterranean climate with summers lasting from early December through to early March – temperatures average around 26˚C/79F; perfect for enjoying a warm winter honeymoon. With an excellent restaurant and arts scene, Cape Town is also the ideal destination for wine connoisseurs – the Cape winelands are just an hour or so’s drive away. Alternatively, enjoy a safari at Aquila Private Game Reserve, a two-hour commute from Cape Town, where you’ll find leopards, buffalos, elephants, lions and rhinos.

Rio de Janerio, Brazil

If you want your honeymoon hot and brimming with culture, choose Rio. Just a three-hour time difference from the UK, go in December or January and you’ll experience temperatures in the high 30s. Take in the iconic Copacabana and Ipanema beaches, ride a cable car to the summit of Sugarloaf Mountain to saviour the spectacular sprawling views over Rio, and explore the many sites of this characterful city.

The Maldives

A tropical nation in the Indian Ocean, south-west of Sri Lanka and India, the Republic of Maldives is a group of 1,192 coral islands renowned for their pristine beaches, superb dining, fish markets and jaw-droppingly beautiful lagoons and reefs. A honeymoon in the Maldives is a luxury treat – with some of the snorkelling and scuba diving in the world – and there are nearly 200 species of coral to discover.

If you’re looking for sunshine, colourful culture, rich history and tasty cuisine, a trip to an adults-only resort in Mexico could work a treat for your honeymoon. With temperatures of 24˚C-28˚C during December in the Riviera Maya, you can enjoy a romantic cocktail while watching the sunset with your beloved. Remember that holidaymakers to Mexico need to pay Mexico departure tax.

If you dream of a winter wonderland for your honeymoon, what better way to spend your time than in the homeland of Santa Claus himself (not forgetting the 190,000 reindeers)? A snow-filled and active honeymoon in the wilderness (try a spot of skiing in one of the resorts) Lapland is a wonderful location to get warm and cosy with the one you love. Finland is the perfect spot to see the Northern Lights, and for an authentic stay, book the Snow Suite at the ice hotel at SnowVillage.

A country that truly comes into its own during the winter months, Iceland is ideal for honeymooners who share a passion for the great outdoors. Explore everything the Land of Fire and Ice has to offer, from Icelandic craft beer to a warm and romantic dip with your loved one in one of the country’s geothermal spas.
